This material may look natural, but it is not. Although it looks like a natural tatami mat, Migusa Earthcolour tatami mats are actually made of polypropylene and calcium carbonate.

An original tatami is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms. Traditionally made using rice straw to form the core, the cores of contemporary tatami are sometimes composed of compressed wood chip boards or polystyrene foam. With a covering of woven soft rush (ilgusa) straw, tatami are made in standard sizes, with the length exactly twice the width and an aspect ratio of 2:1. Usually, on the long sides, they have an edging (heri) of brocade or plain cloth, although some tatami have no edging.

In Japan, in recent years, wooden floors have overtaken tatami matting as the most popular floor surface in modern homes, with tatami generally confined in one or two `Japanese style` rooms. Many Japanese still have a strong emotional attachment to the concept of spending time on the floor though, even though the natural matting is not always resistant to mold and mites. As Migusa tatami mats are made of polypropylene and calcium carbonate, they are an easy to clean and hygienic alternative to the traditional tatami.
